What to do before the movers arrive
You need to have a smooth and trouble-free relocation. Here are important things to do before the movers arrive, according to Liberty Moves, the number one moving company in Valdosta, Georgia:
Clear your home
Sort out your belongings, including setting aside what you will not move out with, and clear your home before the movers arrive. Consult your movers on the items that they will not move for you and make the necessary arrangements. Arrange with specialty movers or plan to move your pets and plants yourself as they cannot be loaded on the moving truck.
Use up or give away to friends and neighbors any perishable food and hazardous materials you may have such as motor oils, antifreeze, paint, charcoal, propane tanks, fertilizers, pesticides, chemicals, car batteries, cleaning supplies and other flammable, explosive or corrosive items.
Secure an appropriate insurance cover for your belongings in case something breaks up on the way.
Create an inventory
Develop a detailed inventory of all the items you are about to move. It will serve as proof of the contents of your household shipment should something go missing or get damaged. List the serial numbers of all of your electronics and appliances, as well as their brands and types.
Clean and organize
Check the condition of each of your belongings and, if dirty, clean by washing or dusting your each one of them in readiness for the movement. Unplug, empty and clean all the electrical appliances – fridge, dishwasher, etc. Remove the batteries from whatever devices you will move out. Empty drawers, cupboards, bookshelves, etc. Drain the fuel out of your lawn mower, snow blower, or other fuel-powered tools you are taking with you. Strip the beds and all other furniture pieces of covers, decorative cushions, linen, etc. and pack the bedding separately.
Pre-pack small items
Keep small items – souvenirs, small decorations, desk organizers and some other bric-a-brac – tidy and put them in sealable bags, so that you do not lose or scatter them during the transportation. Pack them yourself even if you have hired professional packers.
Using a marker or color-codes, label and write specific instructions for anything you want to be handled with special care or to find its rightful place immediately.
Keep separately the items that the movers should not pack and load on the moving truck separately. The items include personal documents, valuables – heirlooms, jewelry, artwork, collector items, essentials box and small electronic devices of crucial importance – laptop, phone, camera, and tablet.
Prepare movement of large items
Measure the doors to see if your larger furniture will fit through them and along narrow corridors, sharp turns, and steep staircases. Design the easiest way to take your stuff out and clear the path of any obstacles. Disassemble bulky furniture pieces if possible. Keep the detached parts and the small hardware elements together with the piece they belong to and wrap them in blankets or plastic wrap for extra protection.
Ensure you are present on the moving day
Ensure to be present on the Moving Day so that you can direct the relocation process.
You need to take precautionary steps depending on the weather condition. These include weather-appropriate clothes if it is raining, your children and pets should be indoors if it is cold or rainy, cover the floors with newspaper or old rugs to protect the floors from mud and dirt and cover all your belongings in plastic wrap to keep them from getting wet.
Prepare house for movers
Remove paintings, mirrors, and clocks from the walls to prevent damaging them.
Take many pictures before the movers arrive to serve as proof of the condition of your household items and your property as well as help you remember your old place well and arrange your new one in the same way if need be.
Secure personal data
Prevent the movers accessing your information – keep credit cards and bank information securely locked, protect your computer with a password, shred any old documents and do everything to protect your privacy and prevent identity theft.
Snacks and drinks, including water
Have snacks and drinks, including drinking water, to recharge your movers’ energy levels for an efficient and speedy job. If you need any help moving, feel free to contact Liberty moves, a moving contractor in Savannah, GA.
