  1. What is your organization’s name and what do you do?

We are the National Military Family Association, and our mission is to support the families of America’s service members through every phase of military life. NMFA offers unique, one-of-a-kind programs that strengthen and empower military families. Our Operation Purple Program gives military children and families the opportunity to share a week together creating new memories in some of America’s most beautiful locations. Our Spouse Employment + Education Program offers funding and scholarships to military spouses pursuing their career and education goals.

  1. When and why have you decided to create this community?

In 1969, NMFA was founded by a handful of military wives who wanted to make sure their widowed friends were properly taken care of. Two short years later, the Survivor Benefit Plan became law, and the Association has been hard at work ever since. A small, but determined, group of spouses around a kitchen table has expanded into a strong force of military families representing all ranks and Services.

  1. What/who is your biggest inspiration?

At NMFA, we believe that when a military member serves, their whole family serves, too. This means each member of the family sacrifices and endures on behalf of our entire nation. We love our troops, and we’re incredibly inspired by the loved ones who stand behind our service members.

  1. What was the most fulfilling moment that happened to you?

Because of generous donors and supporters of NMFA, in 2017, we were able to impact the lives of 1,500 military children from around the country who attended one of 18 weeks of Operation Purple Camps. 40% of those young campers were from military families of the wounded, ill, or injured. Nearly all had at least one parent deploying or returning from deployment. In addition, more than 600 military spouses received over $615,000 in scholarships and funding for their education and employment. To date, the National Military Family Association has given more than $4 million in scholarship money since 2004.

  1. What are the hardest moments you have to deal with occasionally?

Military families endure more than most understand. Spouses sometimes have to put their own education and career goals on hold to take care of their family while their loved one is deployed. Children of service members often attend more than nine different schools before graduation because of constant military moves, and 1 in 4 will experience depression. Today, more than 300,000 service members are deployed around the world, and they are still paying the ultimate sacrifice. Military families are still mourning losses as a result of more than 16 years of war, and the stress and worry associated with having a loved one serve continues to be a difficult consequence to deal with.

  1. Do you get any other support from other organizations, communities?
