How to Tell a Child Your Moving

Some children don’t react well when you tell them you are moving. There is an irrational fear that they will never see their neighborhood friends again and that things just won’t be the same. Ensuring your child understands everything that is coming will help easy their worry. 

Tell them as soon as possible. 

Let your children know about your move as early as possible to help them prepare and make them feel included.  Give them details on when the move is and how they need to prepare. The earlier you tell them, the more time you have to help them feel excited about the move, if they are not 100% excited.

Answer their questions. 

Let your them ask you questions and give them honest answers. There may be an irrational fear that they will never see their neighborhood friends again and that things just won’t be the same, give them honest answers how they can keep in contact or how things will change.

Help them become excited. 

Children will need help becoming excited for the new change. Sharing information that is specific for them like a backyard, pool, or where their room is in the house can help them get excited for the big change.
